Up to 20,000 People Have Applied to the Guyana Development Bank: Is Your Application Ready?
President Ali says an estimated 15,000 to 20,000 people have applied to the Guyana Development Bank. Here is what documents you need, where to get them, and why SME Loan applicants need a business plan.
Short answer: On October 20, 2026, President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali said an estimated 15,000 to 20,000 people have already applied to the Guyana Development Bank since it launched on October 5. Applications are now being reviewed and grouped by business sector. With this many applicants, a complete and clear application matters.
How many people have applied to the Guyana Development Bank?
According to the Department of Public Information, the President said "maybe 15,000, 20,000 persons" have applied. This is an estimate. No figures have been released yet on how many applications were approved or how many loans have been paid out.
What does this mean for you?
The bank's teams are reviewing thousands of applications. An application with every document in place, and with clear answers about the business, is easier for the bank to understand. Missing papers or a vague plan can slow you down.
What documents do I need, and where do I get them?
Most applicants should gather:
- National ID (or digital ID) — the President urged everyone to get their digital ID card.
- Business registration — from the Deeds and Commercial Registry.
- TIN certificate — from the Guyana Revenue Authority.
- NIS number — from the National Insurance Scheme.
- An active bank account — the President also urged people to open one; loans are paid into a bank account.
- A list of equipment you want to buy, with prices.

Applying for the SME Loan? You need a business plan
The SME Loan covers amounts over GYD $300,000, up to GYD $3 million. It needs a business plan. Your ID and registration show who you are. The business plan is the only document that tells the bank why they should lend you money. (The Quick Loan, up to GYD $300,000, does not need a business plan.)
